Wales Environment Link
Wales Environment Link (WEL) is a network of environmental and countryside charities in Wales, most of whom have an all-Wales remit. WEL is officially designated the intermediary body between the government and the environmental charity sector in Wales. Its vision is to increase the effectiveness of the environmental sector in its ability to protect and improve the environment through sharing the voice of the sector.
WEL, together with our sister Link organisations - Wildlife and Countryside Link (in England), Scottish Environment LINK and the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force, have been campaigning for many years for comprehensive marine laws to protect our seas and enable recovery of damaged areas. The UK Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 has finally provided the tools that the Welsh Government needs to improve marine management in Wales, by putting in place better systems for marine conservation and sustainable development of the Welsh marine environment.
The WEL Marine Act Implementation Campaign is being run by a group of environmental charities in Wales, which include the following organisations. For more information about the member organisations, please click on the links below:
This campaign has been kindly funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Tubney Charitable Trust and the Waterloo Foundation.
Three Marine Officers are responsible for the implementation of the campaign:
- Dan Crook is the Marine Policy Officer who leads on Welsh marine planning and licensing. Dan is based within WWF Cymru.
- Gareth Cunningham is the Marine Policy Officer who leads on Welsh marine conservation (including Marine Protected Areas) and Welsh Marine Fisheries. Gareth is based within RSPB Cymru.
- Catie Gutmann Roberts is the Marine Campaigns and Advocacy Officer, and is based within Wildlife Trusts Wales.
